What is a Pasture?
A pasture is an area of land covered with grass or other low-growing plants that is used for grazing livestock. Pastures can vary in size from small plots of land to vast expanses, and they can be natural or cultivated. Grazing animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and horses are allowed to roam and feed on the vegetation within the pasture. Pastures are important for providing food and habitat for livestock, promoting soil health and biodiversity, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices. They are a key component of pastoral farming systems around the world.
What are pastured chickens?
Pastured chickens are chickens that are raised outdoors on pasture or grassy areas, where they can roam freely and forage for food naturally.
How are pastured chickens different from conventionally raised chickens?
Pastured chickens are allowed access to outdoor pasture areas for grazing and foraging, whereas conventionally raised chickens are typically raised indoors in crowded confinement facilities. Hijou Pastured Chickens are 100% natural; free from antibiotics, hormones or steroids.
What do pastured chickens eat?
Pastured chickens primarily eat grass, bugs, insects, seeds, and other vegetation found in their pasture environment. They may also be supplemented with premium grain feed. Through extensive research, at Hijou, our chickens’ all natural feeds are specially formulated for their optimum health and wellbeing.
Are pastured chickens healthier than conventionally raised chickens?
Pastured chickens tend to have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals due to their natural diet and outdoor lifestyle. They are also not exposed to antibiotics and other chemicals commonly used in conventional chicken farming.
What are the environmental benefits of pastured chicken farming?
Pastured chicken farming promotes biodiversity, improves soil health, and reduces pollution compared to conventional chicken farming methods. It also allows for more sustainable land use practices.
Do pastured chickens have access to the outdoors all the time?
Ideally, pastured chickens should have access to the outdoors throughout the day so they can engage in natural behaviours like foraging and sunbathing. At Hijou eco-farm, we deploy Chicken Tractors on the pasture.
How much space do pastured chickens have compared to conventional chickens?
Pastured chickens typically have significantly more space (no more than 350 chickens in 50,000 sqft) to forage compared to conventionally raised chickens, which are often confined to crowded indoor barns or cages.(less than 1 sqft per chicken)

High-quality, lean minced chicken should have a light red tint and appear moist, but not slimy. Any darker red/purple spots indicate a higher ratio of dark meat.
What is the texture of HIJOU Minced Chicken?
Our minced chicken has a texture that browns quickly and absorbs seasonings beautifully. Its lean profile and superior flavour make it a versatile ingredient that retains moisture for juicy results in dishes like meatballs, tacos, and stir-fries.

What does "lean profile" mean for the Minced Chicken?

How long does cooked minced chicken last?
Cooked minced chicken should be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator and used within 3 to 4 days.
What is the safest and best way to defrost HIJOU Minced Chicken?
The safest and most highly recommended method is Refrigerator Thawing. Place the frozen, sealed package on a tray on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. This keeps the meat at a consistently safe temperature.
How long does it take to thaw minced chicken in the refrigerator?
A standard 400gm package of frozen minced chicken will typically take about 24 hours to fully thaw in the refrigerator. Plan your meals at least one day in advance.
Is there a faster, safe way to thaw the minced chicken?
Yes, you can use the Cold Water Thawing method:
1. Ensure the minced chicken is in its original leak-proof packaging or a sealed bag.
2. Submerge the sealed package in a large bowl of cold tap water.
3. Change the water every 30 minutes to keep it cold. A small package of minced chicken should thaw in approximately 1 hour.
Cook the chicken immediately after it is thawed using this method.
Can I use the microwave to defrost?
The microwave can be used, but it is less recommended for quality as it may cause edges to start cooking. If you use this method, select the 'defrost' setting and cook the minced chicken immediately after thawing to prevent bacterial growth.
Is it safe to thaw the minced chicken on the kitchen counter?
NO. Never thaw raw chicken at room temperature. The warm temperature allows harmful bacteria to multiply rapidly, putting the meat in the "danger zone."
Can I re-freeze thawed raw minced chicken?
NO. You should not re-freeze raw minced chicken that has been thawed. Once thawed, it should be cooked. However, you can cook the thawed chicken and then freeze the cooked product.
Overall, consuming factory-farmed chicken meat may pose health risks due to factors such as antibiotic resistance, hormone and chemical exposure, lower nutritional quality, higher levels of contaminants, and environmental concerns. Choosing pasture-raised, organic, or sustainably produced chicken meat can help mitigate these risks and support healthier and more environmentally friendly food systems. Your everyday choices matter.
Pastured chicken meat offers a range of health benefits due to its higher nutrient content, no exposure to antibiotics and chemicals, and more sustainable production methods.
Some of the key health benefits
Higher Nutrient Levels: Pastured chickens typically have higher levels of beneficial nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins (such as vitamin D), and antioxidants compared to conventionally raised chickens. This is because they have access to a more diverse diet, including grass, insects, and seeds, which enriches the nutritional content of their meat.
Lower Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: Pastured chicken meat tends to have a more balanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids, which is beneficial for heart health. A lower ratio is associated with reduced inflammation and a lower risk of chronic diseases like heart disease.
Reduced Antibiotic and Chemical Exposure: Pastured chickens are less likely to be raised with antibiotics and synthetic chemicals commonly used in conventional chicken farming. This reduces the risk of antibiotic resistance and exposure to potentially harmful residues in the meat.
Lean Protein Source: Chicken is a rich source of high-quality protein, which is essential for muscle growth, repair, and overall health. Pastured chicken meat provides lean protein with lower levels of unhealthy fats compared to conventionally raised chicken meat.
Improved Flavor and Texture: Many people find that pastured chicken meat has a superior flavor and texture compared to conventionally raised chicken meat. This may be due to factors such as the chickens' natural diet, outdoor lifestyle, and lower stress levels.
Environmentally Sustainable: Supporting pastured chicken farming can have indirect health benefits by promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. Pastured chicken farming tends to have lower environmental impacts compared to conventional chicken farming, which can help protect ecosystems and public health.
Eating factory-farmed chickens can have several health implications, primarily due to the conditions in which these chickens are raised and the practices involved in their production.
Some of the key health implications include:
Antibiotic Resistance: Factory-farmed chickens are often raised in crowded and unsanitary conditions, which can lead to the spread of diseases among the birds. To prevent and treat these diseases, antibiotics are frequently used in factory farming operations. Overuse of antibiotics in animal agriculture contributes to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can pose significant health risks to humans.
Hormone and Chemical Exposure: Factory-farmed chickens may be raised with the use of growth hormones and other synthetic chemicals to promote rapid growth and prevent disease. These hormones and chemicals can accumulate in the meat and may have adverse effects on human health, including disruptions to hormone balance and potential carcinogenic effects.
Lower Nutritional Quality: Factory-farmed chicken meat may have lower nutritional quality compared to pasture-raised or organic chicken meat. This is because factory-farmed chickens are often raised in confinement and fed a diet that may be lacking in essential nutrients. Additionally, the stress and unnatural living conditions experienced by factory-farmed chickens can affect the quality of their meat.
Higher Levels of Contaminants: Factory-farmed chickens may be more prone to contamination with pathogens such as Salmonella and Campylobacter due to the crowded and unsanitary conditions in which they are raised. Improper handling and processing practices can also contribute to contamination of chicken meat with bacteria and other pathogens, increasing the risk of foodborne illnesses.
Environmental Concerns: Factory farming practices used in the production of chickens can have negative environmental impacts, including pollution of air, water, and soil. The use of large amounts of water, feed, and land for chicken production, as well as the disposal of waste products such as manure, can contribute to environmental degradation and ecosystem disruption.
What are Chicken Tractors?
Chicken tractors are deployed for our pastured chickens for several reasons, primarily to provide a mobile and controlled environment for the chickens to graze on fresh pasture while still being protected from predators and adverse weather conditions.
Here are some reasons why chicken tractors are used:
Rotational Grazing: Chicken tractors allow for rotational grazing practices, where chickens are moved to fresh pasture regularly. This helps prevent overgrazing of vegetation and allows pastures to regenerate, promoting soil health and biodiversity.
Protection from Predators: Chicken tractors provide a secure enclosure for chickens, protecting them from predators such as snakes, wild boar and birds of prey. The enclosed structure of the chicken tractor typically includes wire mesh walls and a roof to deter predators from accessing the chickens.
Controlled Environment: Chicken tractors allow us to control the chickens' environment, including their access to food, water, and shelter. This enables us to easily monitor the chickens' health and well-being more closely and provide for their needs effectively.
Natural Foraging: Chicken tractors enable chickens to engage in natural foraging behaviours, such as scratching and pecking for insects, seeds, and vegetation. This provides the chickens with a varied and nutritious diet, improves the quality of their meat and eggs, and promotes healthier, more flavourful products.
Manure Management: Chicken tractors facilitate the management of chicken manure by confining it to a specific area. As the tractors are moved to fresh pasture, the manure deposited by the chickens fertilizes the soil, improving soil fertility and promoting plant growth.
Mobile Infrastructure: Chicken tractors are designed to be mobile, allowing us to easily move them to different areas of the pasture. This flexibility allows for efficient land management practices, such as pasture rotation and multi-species grazing, and helps prevent soil compaction and degradation.
Overall, chicken tractors are a practical and sustainable tool for raising pastured chickens, providing a balance between mobility, protection, and natural foraging opportunities for the chickens while promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture practices.
What are the key features of your pastured chickens that would appeal to potential customers?
Our pastured chickens are raised in open fields where they have access to fresh grass, insects, and sunlight, resulting in superior taste, texture, and nutritional quality compared to conventionally raised chickens. (Farm Factory)
